Understanding Nutritional Therapy

All living creatures are made up of a huge variety of chemicals and chemical combinations.  Nutrition, whether through consumables (foods & drinks) or whether through supplementation, is also made up of chemicals and combinations of chemicals.  Whether they are natural or not and whether you eat them, drink them, inhale them, inject them or rub them on your skin – chemicals react with other chemicals to create new combinations of chemicals and a reaction of some kind in the body.

Nutritional Therapy involves looking at the entire body and using nutrition and other naturally occurring chemicals, to alleviate symptoms as well as, most importantly, to address the cause or causes of the symptoms.  This is a progressive therapy, as are most natural therapies, and involves changes to nutritional intake (increasing, adding & eliminating) over a period of time to assist the body to start repairing itself.  Often one can feel worse before feeling better –this is a normal progression when using an integrative and more natural approach.

Lifestyle as well as mental, emotional and spiritual factors & choices are also intricately linked to our physical health.  These also need to be addressed using a wholistic approach, in order to achieve optimal health & wellbeing.

Now is the time to take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing – nobody else is going to!

ADD & ADHD: top

Many children (as well as adults) are suffering from these spectrum disorders (ranging from moderate to severe) and they or their parents do not want them to take medication.  There are also many people already on medication, who also benefit tremendously from a good nutrition and supplementation programme.  We offer an alternative as well as a complimentary approach for people wishing to improve their mood, concentration, learning and behaviour.

Arthritis – Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Osteoarthritis, Gout & Fibromyalgia Syndrome: top

These disorders are all influenced by your nutritional intake.  Elimination of certain foods, increasing other nutrients through food and supplementation, as well as making changes to lifestyle choices, can play an enormous role in the symptom management and even alleviation of some of these disorders
.

Breastfeeding: top

This is a critical time in a baby’s nutritional history.  What a mother consumes (by eating, drinking, inhaling, or via the skin) greatly influences what nutrients or toxins a baby receives through the breast milk.  Breastfeeding is the best way for a child to receive the imperative nutrients required for a healthy immune system and strong body, but what a mother consumes, is of utmost importance at this vital stage.  If the mother or father suffers from any allergies or intolerances or they “run in the family”, then this is a crucial stage to help alleviate or even prevent a baby from developing the same.

Baby, Toddler & Children’s Health: top

Starting a baby on solid foods, is the beginning of lifelong eating habits that contribute to their overall health. Starting too early can cause a baby to develop food allergies or intolerances. When? What? How? Why? These questions are all answered.

To get your toddler to eat a larger variety of foods will require a generous amount of patience. Toddlerhood is characterised by a dislike or fear of new foods, so familiarity is the key to acceptance.

School lunch boxes always seem to be the main issue when it comes to feeding children of school-going age.  I have lists of ideas and also conduct workshops for moms (or dads) trying to make healthier changes to their family’s nutritional intake.

Cancer: top

The very large number of inhibitor and promoter type materials in food, have led scientists to believe that dietary practices may be a vital factor in the development of many cancers. In fact, experts now believe that over a third of cancer deaths – possible many more – may be linked to the food we eat every day.

It is normally recommended that before and during chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments, that patients abstain from taking any nutritional supplementation that may influence the treatment.  This is debatable, but definitely AFTER treatment, it is imperative that the body is supported through this stressful time – abundant, healthy nutrition and additional supplementation is essential to help a cancer patient recover.

Depression, Bi-polar Disorder: top

Depression is another spectrum disorder – ranging from mild to severe. Mild cases can be assisted through nutritional therapy (alternative to medication) and the more severe cases (on medication) can be assisted and moderated using a complimentary approach (in combination).  For people wishing to improve their mood, concentration and behaviour – nutrition can play an enormous role.

Bi-Polar Disorder (Manic Depression) is very different to clinical depression, and the nutritional therapy programme varies from individual to individual.  It is important to work in conjunction with the other treating practitioners, in order to create the most optimal treatment programme for the client.  After all – helping to treat or alleviate causes & symptoms – should be the primary goal of all practitioners.

Diabetes, Hyperglycaemia, Syndrome X: top

Diabetes is a disease that is growing world-wide at an astronomical rate, with South Africa at the forefront. Many people have hyperglycemia or even diabetes without even knowing it.  Blood sugar problems can adversely affect the eyes, kidneys and circulation.  A personalised consultation is essential when it comes to nutrient and supplement recommendations for an individual suffering from Diabetes or Blood sugar imbalances. Having diabetes can affect your health for the rest of your life – it is best to avoid getting it in the first place!

Digestive Disorders, IBS: top

Digestive problems are very common. Symptoms could even manifest in other areas of the body. A prolonged digestive process can result in gas, wind, indigestion, abdominal bloating and cramping. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can often be caused by food intolerances or allergies, without the sufferer even realising that they are eating an offending food.

Family-Based Management Of Childhood Obesity: top

Research shows that about 75% of children who are overweight between the ages of 9-12, will grow into overweight adults.

Childhood obesity is on the rise – so much so, that about 40% of all South African children are now overweight and heading for obesity.  Obesity is a disease and should be treated as such.  Being obese – or even moderately overweight – puts undue stress on the back, legs, and internal organs. It increases the body’s resistance to insulin and susceptibility to infection, and puts one at a higher risk for developing coronary artery disease, diabetes, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, stroke, diabetes, cancers and other serious health problems that can result in premature death.

A parent needs to take responsibility for their child’s health, while they are young enough to adapt and develop a healthy lifestyle & a healthy way of eating. Individual nutrition programmes very rarely work, that is why the WHOLE family has to make changes for management of childhood weight problems to be effective – with a positive side-effect of added health for everyone!

Tackling the media, advertising, fast food chains & school Tuckshops seems like a daunting task, but the more people insisting on change – the faster and more effective it will be.

Fertility, Conception & Pregnancy: top

Getting your bodies ready for conception involves some effort from both partners.  Most men don’t realise that it takes about 3 months to develop healthy, viable sperm and only 1 month to develop a healthy egg! BEFORE you/your wife falls pregnant – it is imperative that both of you are optimally healthy in order to make the healthiest sperm and egg that you possibly can. A sensible and specialised Nutrition & Lifestyle Programme is essential before you take that big step!

During pregnancy, additional nutrition is required for mother and child.  My Nutritional Programmes will help to answer these questions for you:

How can I eat to sustain optimal health for myself as well as my baby, without putting on too much weight?

How can I change my nutritional intake to reduce allergies & intolerances?

Do I need to eat differently during each trimester?

What supplements should I be taking, are any harmful during pregnancy and am I perhaps “overdosing”?

Food Allergy (IgE) & Intolerance (IgG) Testing: top

Many people suffer from food intolerances, without even realising it.  As is often the case, the symptoms are not associated with nutritional consumption.

I use full blood pathology testing for allergies (IgE) as well as finger-prick tests (IgG) for up to 90 different food intolerances. Elimination diets, Rotation diets, Failsafe diets and individually formulated nutritional programmes, can help alleviate many of the symptoms that may be making you feel unwell or not being able to enjoy optimal health, by addressing the cause(s)!

Heart Disease, Stroke: top

Most cardiovascular diseases result from atherosclerosis (most common cause of arteriosclerosis, marked by a build-up of plaque containing cholesterol, fatty material and cellular debris).  Atherosclerosis and its complications are the major causes of deaths in the Western world.  Heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases cause almost 50% of all deaths in the USA – South Africa is not far behind!

In many cases heart disease & stroke are preventable through changes in lifestyle and nutrition.  Whole foods and supplements containing bioflavanoids, fibre, Vitamin K and antioxidants etc. can play a major role in their prevention.

High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure: top

High cholesterol is directly related to conditions such as arteriosclerosis (thickening of the walls of the arterioles, with loss of elasticity and contractility, mainly due to calcium deposits), cardiovascular disease, circulatory problems, heart attack, and hypertension.

17 large studies involving 43,000 patients showed that decreasing Blood Pressure with drugs did not significantly reduce the incidence of death due to heart disease – nutrition can play a great role!

Cholesterol, Blood Pressure & Homocysteine< tests are accurate predictors of:  over 50 diseases, risk factors of a premature death from common causes, and how quickly we will age.

Liver & Gallstones: top

Our bodies accumulate toxins on a daily basis and they also eliminate some of them.  Those that remain behind in our elimination organs (lungs, liver, kidneys and colon) and in our body tissues (mainly fatty tissue) accumulate over time.  With this continual toxic build-up in our tissues, it can only lead to one thing – DISEASE!

The liver is the largest organ in the body, with many functions that are essential to health and wellbeing: filtering out toxins, manufacturing cholesterol, converting glucose to glycogen and back again, producing bile – to name but a few.  Bile is stored in the gallbladder, where some gallstones are also stored, but they are manufactured mainly in the liver itself, where most of the stones actually remain.  The liver is subjected to much abuse in a lifetime and it is essential that it is regularly cleaned, in order to promote optimal health.

Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis:

top

Osteoporosis
is a progressive disease and means “porous bones” in Latin.  Bones become weaker, causing changes in posture and increasing the chance of breaking bones or fractures.  Osteomalacia is a separate condition, caused by a lack of dietary calcium, which results in a softening of the bone. With osteomalacia there is only a deficiency of calcium in the bone, but in contrast, with osteoporosis, there is a lack of calcium and other minerals (inorganic), as well as a decrease in the non-mineral framework (organic matrix) of bone.  There is therefore more to osteoporosis, than just a lack of dietary calcium!

Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease.  It involves the deterioration of the cartilage protecting the ends of the bones.  Sometimes caused by injury or hereditary factors – it is normally a result of the general wear and tear of aging, diet & lifestyle.

PMS, Pre-Menopause, Menopause, Hormonal Imbalances: top

Men have one dominant reproductive hormone – testosterone, and females have a myriad of hormones to affect their wellbeing.

From a dietary perspective, there are many factors affecting the Endocrine System (hormonal system), food and stress being major ones. Stress and worry will cause chronic strain to the adrenal glands.  Therefore major factors to hormonal health are, controlling stress and supporting the body with an individualised nutritional programme.
